Photo of the Day: Pragmatism and slogans don't mix

  1. Yeah, I have to agree with this, Ms. Pants. A policy wonk should never be assigned to the Slogans Department.

    But, policy wonking isn't the only way pragmatism exists. The slogan "No taxation without representation" comes to mind here. A lofty idea wasn't the only thing being conveyed here. There's also the very practical reality of a government having no idea what the citizens they are taxing would need due to distance alone. Giving people representation while taxing them allows them to deal with issues unique to their communities without always relying on a remote governmental body miles away.

    In other words, we didn't just kick the British out because they were mean. We did so for the very practical reason that they were over 3,000 miles away and there was no internet in the 18th century. There was no way Britain could effectively govern us regardless of their intentions. Eventually, Britain's other colonies realized this and broke away, too.

    So, pragmatism still has a place in the Slogans department. To me, idealism mixed in with some pragmatism is the best bet.
